Harriet P. Smith was a chubby kid and an artist in High school; she always did things her own way, resulting in her being a bit of an outcast. When she learns that her dead husband Donnie's mother is having surgery, she decides to bring her son Zach to see his grandmother for Christmas, and books a room at the local B&B in Doolittle Arkansas. She has not been back since Donnie's funeral five years before.

Jake Porter is meeting his father at the local B&B in Doolittle Arkansas. His father met a retired schoolteacher on the Internet and decided to ask her to marry him. Jake has not been back since the High School prom that he went to with Harriet. Little does he know that Harriet had a baby soon afterwards. He does know that she married her best friend Donnie.

When Jake and Harriet meet again, Jake is attracted to the sophisticated woman in the red cashmere coat, unaware of her identity. Harriet is still hurt by the fact that Jake disappeared the day after the prom and believes that her dream date to Jake was based on a dare from his fellow football friends. She is unsure how to tell him that Zach is his son, especially since he has made clear on many occasions that he does not want children.

Not the Marrying Kind is a light romance about two people who have sworn off marriage but nevertheless fall in love with each other. They both remember the date they had years ago and Jake is still angry with his father for making him leave Doolittle. Can they make it past the old hurts and betrayals and move on to a passionate new life? Not the Marrying Kind makes a relaxing beach read.
