M. Kelby's fourth novel. Full of unusual characters – a slasher-movie actress, a Scottish circus clown, a blind heiress, among others – this story takes off running and doesn't stop, although the reader must stop every now and again to absorb what has been read. One page might have you laughing out loud at the antics of the players and the next leave you awed by the sagacity of the prose – wisdom of the ages. I loved the pet vulture that has a pink leash. And then there is the wee doggie that resembles Barry Manilow. Wilson, long estranged from his brother Peter, finds the latter's body in a dumpster outside – you guessed it – the Bad Girl's Bar & Grill. One thing leads to another - more bodies, bombs that never explode, suspicious doings by suspicious people, a circus starring life-sized puppets. An unscrupulous real estate mogul wants to turn green space into concrete and girders. His method of persuasion leaves a lot to be desired. This man, to my mind, represents all the developers who want to turn a buck and move on, leaving the ecology of an area fouled forever. Murder at the Bad Girl's Bar & Grill is great beach reading. Try to find an isolated spot of sand, though. You won't want to dismay others on the beach when you start laughing uproariously.
