This installment was first released in 1990, and the series is still going strong today as cozy mysteries catch on more and more in popular culture. Davidson's quirky main character, Goldy; the interesting population of the town, including her ex-husband; and the recipes that are scattered throughout the tomes make the series fun and keep readers coming back. In Catering to Nobody, Goldy is introduced as a divorced caterer and mother of one pre-teen son, Arch. Just as she is pulling her life together after her divorce from an abuser, Goldy's business is shut down when someone tries to poison her ex-father-in-law at one of her catered functions (a post-funeral dinner for a former beloved teacher of Arch's, no less). Goldy begins to research - with and without the help of the police - why someone would want to murder Fritz Korman, why the teacher showed up dead, and how these things could be related. Unlike many mysteries that I read, I could keep all the characters aligned in my head and therefore try to solve the mystery along with Goldy. The tale is amusing, easy to read, and a great start to a series. The reader is intrigued by what might happen next in Goldy's relationships with her ex-husband, Schultz the policeman, her son, and Pomeroy the beekeeper. I enjoyed Catering to Nobody immensely and look forward to reading more in the series.
