Heartbreaker    by Julie Garwood Order:  USA  Can Pocket, 2000 (2000) Hardcover, Paperback, Audio, e-Book Read an Excerpt     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Father Tom Madden hears a heartbreaking confession when a man taunts him with a 'confession' of past tortures and murders and with his plan to commit another, on Tom's beloved sister Laurant. Tom immediately calls his best friend who happens to be an FBI agent, Nick Buchanan, and the wheels are set in motion. Heartbreaker is a good read as romantic thrillers go, though Laurant is almost too much of a saint and the psycho somewhat of a cardboard sinner. In fact all the characters, while colorful, lack depth. The story itself does not quite live up to its dramatic beginning but there are some nice touches, like Agent Buchanan's extreme fear of flying. The plot strains credibility from Nick's encounter with an amateur hijacker on the airplane early in the book to the local Sheriff's covering up his son's serious crimes. But it moves fast, there's plenty of romantic interest with the predictable set of misunderstandings, and Garwood throws in a few surprises along the way.
