Best friends Zoe and Lindsay live in a Las Vegas suburb that isn't much different from the many suburban neighborhoods springing up around the gambling capital. They can't wait to get out of high school and travel the world.

After their junior year in high school, Zoe's parents plan a trip to Europe. This is a trip Zoe always expected to take with Lindsay. She is feeling both guilty and excited when she and Lindsay get together one last time before Zoe leaves for London. And Lindsay drops a bombshell. Lindsay's plans for the time Zoe is away include losing her virginity to a popular football player. Zoe tries to talk her into waiting for someone she loves and they spend their last night together arguing.

Once in Europe, much to her frustration, Zoe's dad takes away her cell phone and won't allow visits to Internet cafes. This trip is family time only. She'll see everyone again soon.

Zoe examines the positives and negatives of her lifelong friendship with Lindsay while she visits England, France, and Italy. Although she wishes Lindsay were with her, she explores the differences in their personalities and the effect those differences have on them both. Zoe returns to Vegas to find out that Lindsay was murdered while they were enjoying Europe. When her dad returns her cell phone Zoe finds two cryptic messages from Lindsay sent on the night of her death. She is sure that if she can figure out what the messages mean, she will have clues to find the killer.

A subplot tells about Zoe's relationship with her sister Chloe. She and Chloe, who don't always like each other, find out that having a sister has a lot going for it. As Zoe lets go of her best friend, she and her sister grow closer.
