altimore private detective Tess Monaghan finds herself learning more than she wants to know about filming a television series. Scriptwriter and producer, Flip Tumult (son of a Hollywood legend) puts her on the production's payroll after he drags her out of Patapsco River where he almost mowed down her scull. Not that she is anxious to bodyguard the spoiled star of the TV series, but in return Flip agrees to take on Lloyd, Crow's young friend, as an assistant to the writers.

elene probably doesn't need a bodyguard, but with the vandalism taking place around the set, as well as the death of a possible stalker, having Tess to babysit his star is a small price to pay for Flip's peace of mind. But keeping Selene in line is harder than Tess anticipated. Her first night finds the two of them traveling to New York City for dinner where Tess swallows a knockout drug that the underage actress puts in her drink. Embarrassed, Tess is ready to resign if the production doesn't fire her first, but back at the studio offices, Flip Tumult's personal assistant has been murdered. He thinks keeping a watch on Selene is more important than ever.
