This is the second edition (updated with hundreds of new entries) of a useful dictionary of scientific and technological vocabulary. Its over 17,000 terms range in subject matter from Acoustics to Zoology. Coverage includes chemistry, physics, biology, earth sciences, biotechnology, engineering, astronomy, electronics, medicine and telecommunications.

Each entry identifies itself as noun, verb, prefix, symbol, abbreviation, and so on, as well as the subject matter that it falls under (e.g. COMPUT for Computing). I've always been fascinated by dictionaries and enjoyed dipping into this one to learn that firn is 'the spring snow on high mountains which becomes harder during the summer' and that quantum foam is 'an extremely tiny hypothetical region of space-time in which numerous particles are formed and destroyed.'

A supplement at the back of the book lists planets of the solar system, math symbols, measurements and the periodic table. This Dictionary of Science and Technology is a handy resource for anyone interested in deepening their understanding of how the world works.
