Once again Holly Winter, dog writer and indefatigable defender of the canine breed, finds herself embroiled in murder. Her search for a missing blue malamute leads her to a worried dog-minder named Mellie and a house containing a body. The body belongs to Holly Winter! This is, however, a different Holly Winter.

In fact, Holly Winters abound as our heroine continues her search. Holly shrugs off what appears to be an attempt to steal her identity; she is much more concerned about the identity theft of her own female malamute Kimi, when she finds a young female wearing Kimi's old tags and identifying Holly as the owner. In spite of the madcap – and maddening – misadventures that ensue, the situation is deadly serious. It is evident that the murderer is far from finished, and somehow the missing blue is connected to the mystery. Before the case is resolved, Holly and her beloved dogs, as well as Mellie, find themselves at risk.

For those familiar with Holly and her adventures, Steve is off on a trip and thus unaware of his bride's dangerous antics.

I always enjoy Conant's dog-lover mysteries. Her protagonist is an original, bright and inquiring. The secondary characters are also worth encountering, and the plots lively and entertaining. As a dog-lover myself, I am delighted to meet her canine characters. In Holly's view, dogs, particularly malamutes, are far worthier personalities than most humans. (It is a view I often share as well!)

If you like a good mystery with an offbeat cast of characters, do check out Susan Conant's dog-lover series. She is a prolific writer, so there are many to entertain you.
