Who's Kitten Who? is the sixth in Cynthia Baxter's delightful Reigning Cats & Dogs mystery series. Protagonist Jessica Popper is a veterinarian and amateur sleuth - much to her fiancé Nick Burby's chagrin and outright disapproval of her second choice.

Sharing a small bungalow with Nick, Jess tries to prepare for an unexpected visit from her future in-laws (she calls them the Burbarians). Coming home after a day caring for Long Island pets, she finds her own animals have trashed her living quarters. I laughed out loud as I read this chapter. And bristled at the way Nick's mother treated Jess.

After a friend asks her to investigate the playwright's murder, Jess gets roped into playing a part in a local theater production. In so doing, she learns the backstage machinations that are necessary to shape a play into being. Fascinating. I always wonder what goes on behind the scenes. Now I know. The premise proves intriguing and builds suspense easily. Baxter has given her readers characters that seem real, with actions that suit their personalities.

At the head of each chapter are comments from various famous people on the subject of animals. Such as Robert Benchley's 'A boy can learn a lot from a dog: obedience, loyalty, and the importance of turning around three times before lying down.' These wonderful quotes add to the atmosphere of a cleverly written mystery. Who's Kitten Who? is a fun read that entertains.
