Lady Cordelia Bannister is not happy that her family has decided it is time she should marry. Cordelia is the youngest of four daughters and by far the most stubborn. She is to marry American Daniel Sinclair. Knowing nothing about him, she devises a plan to get better acquainted. Disguised as her companion (her cousin Sarah), Cordelia sets off to extract information from Daniel's secretary, Warren Lewis. The problems begin when she discovers that she really likes the secretary, but knows that she must marry Daniel.

Daniel Sinclair, who has always had a rocky relationship with his father, is dismayed to discover that he is now to marry Lady Cordelia Bannister. When Lady Cordelia's companion, Sarah, mistakes him for his secretary, he does nothing to correct her. He spends time with her and begins to have feelings for her. When Daniel tries to talk to his real secretary about it, he doesn't get any pity - Warren Lewis advises him to come clean. But Daniel has taken the farce too far and can't figure out how to get out of it. He is taken with Sarah, but is committed to marry Cordelia.

Secrets of a Proper Lady is filled with romance and wit. Daniel and Cordelia each think they are learning about their future spouses but the deception will eventually come to light. They have already fallen in love, but can they forgive each other for the trickery? Victoria Alexander creates an amusing, light-hearted story that readers will not want to put down.
