Author Alexander McCall Smith has the uncanny ability to combine a story of an unusual married couple and their lives with observations of the world and mankind in general. In The Good Husband of Zebra Drive, Mma Ramotswe is having staffing problems. Her husband, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni is growing tired of his role of garage mechanic, albeit as owner and operator of the Speedy Garage which has a fine reputation. He asks his wife, a woman with a traditional figure, if he can solve the case of a woman who suspects her husband of cheating. Mma Ramotswe's able assistant, Mma Makutsi, the lady who scored ninety-seven per cent at the Botswana Secretarial School, threatens to branch out on her own. One of Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni's apprentices feels he can make it as a taxi cab driver and wants to leave the garage. Meanwhile, Mma Makutsi takes on the case of missing office supplies, while Mma Ramotswe tackles the sudden deaths of three hospital patients on three Fridays in a row. As always, Smith ties the unusual cases into everyday living with the everyday people of Botswana, and provides his readers with yet another delightful story. His insight into people's hearts and souls allows readers to apply his gentle advice to their own lives.
