Lila Abbott knows all about the rich summer men who show up at Port Gamble. She has had her experiences with them and has sworn off them. Lila is experiencing empty nest syndrome because her daughter moved out to go to school. Being a single mom, she needs to find a way to keep herself occupied. Lila is at her job passing out samples of cheez whiz and crackers when Emily Ruth, another local girl, drops dead. Since Lila has a secret talent for being able to listen to the dead, Emily Ruth decides that she will find a way to tell Lila who murdered her.

Lucas Griffin returned to Port Gamble to get back his summer home, which was awarded to Emily Ruth in their divorce settlement. Now that she is dead, he knows that he will be the prime suspect in the murder. After he enlists Lila's help, the attraction between them is immediate, but Lila hesitates because she knows that Emily is trying to show her who the murderer is - and it could well be Lucas.

The Forever Summer is a light romantic suspense, whose humor makes a reader laugh out loud. Though Lila and Lucas are attracted to each other right away, they're kept busy by the murder and trying to discover what Emily Ruth's ghost is trying to tell them. Suzanne Macpherson has a writing style that grabs the attention right away - and keeps it to the last page.
