C
onstant misdirection and surprises are the norm in the latest engaging, thoroughly entertaining thriller from James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. After NYPD detective Lauren Stillwell spots her husband Paul heading into the St. Regis hotel with '
a twenty-something blonde
' and decides to enjoy a
quickie
of her own, she finds herself in uncharted territory, facing danger and betrayal at every turn. Time and time again, only her quick wits save Lauren and Paul from jail or worse.
T
hough James Patterson is well known for contortionist plots, he and Michael Ledwidge have surpassed themselves with this one. Lauren abuses her position to fake evidence and protect the man she married. She has many close shaves along the way, and it seems that every time she believes she's finished, the authors throw another spanner in the works for her to deal with. Lauren's relationship with her high school sweetheart husband is on a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, trust and distrust, with no clue for the reader as to where and how it will end. It seems impossible that Lauren will come through unscathed, and the authors make us like her and side with her even when we know that what she's doing is wrong.
I
mprobable as the journey is, it's quite a ride. So, drop everything you're doing, hop on (you won't get off till you turn the last page) and enjoy
