Fifteen-year-old Juliana and her nine-year-old siblings are dragged away from their home in California to England by their British mother. The trip will be a trial separation from the children's father. They move into a cottage in Blackthorn, a little town on the coast that is popular with artists.

Juliana is just like any other California teenager, except she doesn't remember anything that happened before she was found alone at night on the beach. Five-year-old Juliana was soon adopted. Her mother is an artist and her father an architect.

Her mother's school friend Liza is murdered within a day of their arrival in Blackthorn. Juliana is the only person who isn't sure the unpopular Liza was murdered by the town lout. Her questions make her a target. Meanwhile, something about Blackthorn is causing Juliana's forgotten memories to return in unreliable clumps.

Reiss has several mysteries to her credit and Blackthorn Winter is one of the best.
