This is a fun read, just right for the Holiday Season. I am a fan of M. C. Beaton and have read all her books, both the Hamish Macbeth series and the Agatha Raisin books. She's never let me down. A Highland Christmas is another Hamish Macbeth mystery. Hamish is called to the town of Cnothan in the northern most section of Scotland. Their fairy lights and big Christmas tree have disappeared, and it's up to Hamish to track them down. His own town of Lochdubh is strongly Calvinistic and doesn't believe in Santa Claus or any of the trappings of Christmas.

Seemingly bumbling as always, Hamish manages to solve the mystery and help an unhappy little girl find love. He even takes a bus full of townspeople to celebrate Christmas in an unusual way. The only jarring note is the absence of his girlfriend Priscilla Haliburton-Smythe, who is in New York City. Happily, Hamish again outwits Chief Inspector Blair. A Highland Christmas is short and sweet - just the right note on which to start the holiday season - and a story that can be re-read each year and still bring delight.
