Marion Edmonds and Ahza Moore's When Bad Things Happen to Good Knitters is an excellent guide for knitters of all skill levels to keep on hand. In fact, it is a squat, slim paperback that will fit nicely in any knitting bag for easy reference. The authors jovially call it 'An Emergency Survival Guide' and that is not really too far off.

This slim volume is divided into four easy-to-navigate chapters dealing with the different stages of the knitting process. Each chapter covers an extensive variety of problems that may arise while knitting and the solutions to fix them. Mixed throughout the technical steps is a little bit of humor, which helps keep possibly frustrating situations light.

Throughout, sidebars offer helpful tips, handy charts, and amusing anecdotes. Also helpful are diagrams which are very easy to read even though they are in black and white (actually, green and purple, but it is the same thing). As I am a novice knitter trying to teach myself, I will be keeping When Bad Things Happen to Good Knitters handy, as I believe all knitters should.
