This romance has a unique plot. It opens as Evan MacDonald sets off on a business trip to South America, leaving behind his wife Julia and their two children. When the news arrives that Evan has been kidnapped, Julia's life is turned upside down. For the next five years, Julia and her children live in a different world than the one they were used to. She flies to Columbia with Evan's boss Harold to help negotiate with the kidnappers, leaving the children behind. Julia lives in fear, not knowing whether they will ever see Evan again.

As Julia waits for news, she reminisces over how she and Evan first met, and the romance that eventually led to their life together as husband and wife. Her admiration for Evan - a boy who grew up under difficult circumstances but was nevertheless able to make a successful life - shows in her narrative. The thought of Evan never returning to her after all they had been through devastates her, and she will not give up until they find him dead or alive.

The plot twists and surprises in If I'd Never Known Your Love make the book worth reading. I didn't quite connect with the characters, although the story line itself kept my interest. The kidnapping and the negotiations that Julia had to deal with kept me on the edge of my seat. The second part of the story had a different feel from the first and a surprising conclusion. The story is well crafted, with an intriguing plot that keeps a reader's interest until the very end.
