Samantha Rainford returns from her three week honeymoon to find herself being served with divorce papers. She is shocked and heartbroken and soon finds out she is not the only Mrs. Rainford. How could she think she knew her husband only to find she knew absolutely nothing about him?

Sam and her best friend decide to sign up for the FBI and enlist to begin extensive training. After eight months Sam finds herself back in civilian life, being told she didn't make the cut. She is still reeling with emotions from her divorce and feels like she cannot make anything of herself. She starts a search for the other Mrs. Rainfords, forms a friendship with them, and their joint plan for revenge on their heartless ex-husband begins to take shape.

They are approached to join a top secret special training program high in the mountains of North Carolina. The camp is run by ex-CIA Koller Havapopulas, known as Pappy, a handsome Greek god. He has a reputation for transforming civilians into skilled fighters. An attraction blossoms between Sam and Pappy but she wants to prove to him that she can complete the course without any special favours. Pappy knows how to put people through training but has no skills in communicating his feelings to a woman.

Sparks fly and Sam leaves the mountain to continue her quest for revenge on her ex. She misses her friends and realizes how much the mountain and the camp had quickly become her home. Can she pick up the pieces of her former life or will Pappy declare his love for her? Her friends decide to leave and give their support to Sam, and soon they are scheming to extract money from their ex. The plan falls into place and Sam is shocked to find a connection between the two men in her life. How can this be happening, and what does it mean?

In The Marriage Game, Fern Michaels has given us a story of strong women with wit, who bond survivor style under the strangest circumstances and who find romance along the way.
