The nutrition expert for the Today show now brings us Joy Bauer's Food Cures. She offers coaching and nutrition information, encouraging the reader to make a commitment to reach personal goals regarding healthy eating. She suggests starting by writing a food diary and documenting medical history. And she offers many sensible tips that work, based on her own experiences with a myriad of clients - e.g. if you have a nighttime binge habit, fill up on healthy snacks first.

Each chapter of the book addresses a particular health issue, foods to eat and avoid, recommended lifestyle changes, and a 4-Step Program tailored to support the particular problem. Step 1 is Start with the Basics; Step 2 provides Your Ultimate Grocery List; Step 3 encourages Going Above and Beyond; while Step 4 provides Meal Plans. Health issues addressed range from Weight Loss and Hair Health to Cardiovascular Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Memory, Insomnia, and Celiac Disease.

At the back of the book, Bauer provides guidance on Decoding a Nutrition Label and Joy's Food Picks on specific brands of packaged foods, as well as detailed references. Informative sidebar FAQs - such as one about promising herbal remedies for arthritis - are interspersed throughout, as are tasty recipes. Those that I intend to try include Tuscan Bean Dip, Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry and Vegetables, Chocolate-Hazelnut Biscotti, and Chopped Chicken Salad with Apples and Walnuts.

As many will, I plan to start by working on the Losing Weight chapter of Joy Bauer's Food Cures. But I'll delve into other sections for different family members, and expect to use this very useful and comprehensive resource as an ongoing reference for nutritional advice and healthy recipes.
