Neve Halloran and her daughter Mickey live in a small coastal town in Rhode Island. They share the love of the natural rugged beauty and the wildlife that surrounds them. Both Neve and her daughter are struggling to make a new life on their own after Neve's husband Richard has moved on to a new wife and family.

Mickey is dealing with feelings of adbandonement by her father. She soon meets a young boy who shares her passion for the ocean and the wildlife, while her mother is drawn to the Ranger of the Refuge Beach Sanctuary. Both boy and man have been loners since tragedy struck their lives, and relate best to nature rather than other people.

Neve learns that the Ranger is dealing with family problems. He has lost his son to a war and is not on speaking terms with his father, who is still healing from World War II. Her daughter's new friend has lost his father to drowning, but is still drawn to the ocean as a comfort.

As the couples come together to help an injured great Snowy Owl, they find healing in their friendships. While watching the owls interact they learn what is important in their lives.

The community comes together after a discovery offshore threatens their existence. Once again Luanne Rice has given us a beautiful story of love, family and friends. She shows us how people can help one another by reaching out and standing up for their beliefs. The Edge of Winter is a truly heartwarming read.
