Precious Ramotswe, a traditional-sized lady, is taxed to the limit. In this third of Alexander McCall Smith's delightful No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, she is faced with having to move her office to the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors site because her agency is stretched to the limit financially.

The owner of the Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors - her fiancé, Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni - is suffering from depression and needs looking after. The two orphans she and her fiancé have taken into their home need personal attention. Precious's assistant, Mma Makutsi, must handle the garage and the agency while Precious pursues a possible poisoner. Mma Makutsi must discover for herself the morality of four beautiful girls for the sponsor of a local beauty contest.

While all this is happening, the author inserts many simple life truths. Never read any of Smith's books for the story alone. While the plots never disappoint, this Botswana series assures us that people are the same the world over. They have the same likes and dislikes and hopes and disappointments as the rest of us. To different degrees maybe, but the same in the essentials. Morality for Beautiful Girls is uplifting and refreshing - a must read.
