The woman has a sensation of someone chasing her. She falls into the water and is carried down over a waterfall and swiftly downriver. When she manages to get ashore, the jungle surrounding her is completely unfamiliar. She doesn't know who she is or how she got there. She follows the river down and out of the mountains and ends up at the house of Monica Pierce, a sympathetic young woman.

They are in Kauai, but the woman - now called Jade due to her beautiful green eyes - has no memory. Is she a victim, or someone dangerous? Monica's brother Cameron sets out to investigate Jade, discover who she really is, and determine her agenda. Is she out to con them? He just wants to protect Monica, but is strangely drawn to the beautiful Jade. Jade begins to remember fragments of her life, but the danger seems to have followed her. When her true identity comes to light, Cameron, Monica, and even Jade have a difficult time grasping the consequences.

This is an intriguing mystery by Kristen Heitzmann, who has a gift for romantic suspense. The first half is interesting, exciting, and keeps the reader guessing as to what will happen next. The development of a relationship between Cameron and Jade is believable and heartwarming. The Hawaiian setting is fantastic. The descriptions of the land, the people, and the food make you feel you are experiencing the tropical paradise firsthand.

After the first half, the plot begins to drag somewhat. When the mystery is solved, it doesn't seem that it should have taken almost 500 pages to conclude. However, there is enough action and adventure to keep the reader engaged throughout the story, while the spiritual element of the plot is well-integrated and not obtrusive. The characters' spiritual journeys are superbly handled. Overall, Freefall is thrilling romantic suspense that fans of Kristen Heitzmann and mystery novels should be sure to read.
