annie Flagg's
Can't Wait to Get to Heaven
is an absolutely wonderful book. Flagg - of
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café
fame - has created another unique character and heartwarming setting in Elner Shimfissle and the closely knit community of Elmwood Springs, Missouri, in which she lives.
E
lner isn't quite sure of her age. Born at home, her birth was registered in the family bible. Elner is sure her sister threw the bible out so no one would know how old she - the sister - was. The story is set in motion when Elner (who's at least in her late eighties) is picking figs from her tree. Attacked by wasps, she falls off the ladder, becoming unconscious.
F
ull of passion and compassion, Elmwood Springs is an old-timey town by today's standards. When one person is hurt, they all hurt. When the chips are down they are there for each other, no matter what their differences might be. Or their beliefs.
I
simply can't reveal any more of the book. I don't want to ruin the delights in store for the reader. Suffice it to say, that anyone who could write

Standing in the Rainbow
is incapable of writing a boring book. Treat yourself to a great read in
Can't Wait to Get to Heaven
. Buy several copies, in fact, to hand out to friends whom you think need a lift.
