Abby Cahill needs a temporary place to live while she helps out at a Wisconsin hospital as the interim director. She was recommended for the job by her friend Grace who just retired. After an unsuccessful stay in a room let out by an elderly gentleman (who thought her lifestyle too rowdy), she needs a place to stay but because of the time of year, there are no motel rooms available.

Ethan Matthews has come to the hospital because of a nasty injury. While he's waiting to be looked at, he sees Abby with her friend Erin's three children (she's been baby sitting, which is also part of the reason her landlord evicted her). Ethan doesn't get a good impression. However Abby finds herself involved with Ethan because he doesn't trust any social worker to take care of his son Keifer while being treated at the hospital. Abby volunteers only because she knows the seriousness of his injury. While Keifer is at first timid with Abby, the two soon bond.

Out of necessity for both of them, Ethan and Abby come to an agreement that allows Abby to stay on his property for the summer for free. In return she helps with household chores, and looks after ten-year old Keifer while his father is researching the wolves in the area. Then things begin to happen on Ethan's property, that signal danger. And at Abby's work, things happen that cause Abby and the reader to wonder if someone has it out for her.

I enjoyed A Temporary Arrangement because its story lines kept me interested. The mystery of who was out to sabotage Abby's career, and who was out to get Ethan, kept a fast pace throughout. But the subplot of Keifer's need for his father's attention was just as important. I enjoyed the book from beginning to end, and would not have minded if it had gone on a bit longer.
