Somehow I missed Elizabeth Peters' fifteenth novel in her Amelia Peabody series (I just reviewed the eighteenth – Tomb of the Golden Bird – which is a winner.) Found Children of the Storm the other day and immediately put off anything I had to do and re-introduced myself to one of my favorite fictional characters - in her trademark split skirts and tool belt and air of surety.

Children of the Storm goes back a few years when Nefret's and Ramses' twins are younger and more of a handful. Emerson's half brother Sethos turns up at their home outside Luxor, Egypt. Amelia and Emerson hope that he can be of assitance to track down a thief. Priceless jewelry excavated from a tomb by their friend Cyrus is stolen and the man they suspect has disappeared. When his bones turn up in the desert, Amelia is at her best – detecting and running the whole show. Unfortunately she cannot control the bad guys, and events occur beyond her reach.

I cannot say this is one of Peters' best – because they are all her best. Every one of the eighteen. Reading them makes me feel as though back with family I had not seen for a while, and very content to be there. The characters – both good and bad – are many and varied, and most appeared in previous novels. The plot gets complicated so one must pay attention. It's worth the effort. At one point, Amelia talks to her dear readers and says that by now they may have figured out the mystery. I had suspicions but was way off base. Didn't matter, as I loved every page and every word on every page. Good writing does that for me.
