In her Introduction, Bess Gallanis tells us that though yoga is about building 'strength, stamina and flexibility', it also demands that you 'slow down, look inward, clear the chatter from your mind, and develop a relationship with an important person in your life: yourself.' Her 'Hip Guide To Everything Om' provides the tools to do just that.

This small manual covers breathing exercises and relaxation techniques, six complete sets of basic yoga-flow practices, self-reflection exercises and a few healthy recipes. A brief intro goes into the history of yoga, the different styles that have evolved, and how yoga relates to life. Exercises are described clearly, with illustrations of the poses. Six specific practices (sequences of yoga movements) are proposed for different times of day (starting while still in bed) and varying moods. Topics touched on in violet sidebars include the chakra (wheel of light) energy system, Ayurvedic medicine, aromatherapy, henna tattoos, the healing powers of gems, journaling, good sleep habits, home spa treatments, vegetarian eating, meditation, and Buddhism. Recipes range from a Power Smoothie to Carrot Cake Muffins.

This engaging little book combines Yoga 101 with introductions to many topics of interest to yoginis. It concludes with a chapter on Choosing a Yoga Style for those who wish to take regular classes, and a list of Yoga Resources.
