In Michelle Rowen's debut novel Bitten & Smitten, Sarah Dearly is set up on a blind date, not realizing her date is a vampire. After she gets bitten, her adventures in the world of vampires begin. The story is told in a light-hearted comedic tone. Poor Sarah finds herself trying to sort out this mess, not believing at first that vampires even exist. Through the help of an old master, Theirry de Bennicoeur (hundreds of years old and suicidal), she learns what it takes to be successful and survive in the world of vampires. Though she has a difficult time disengaging from her former life, after attending a family wedding she discovers that the world of vampires seems to have overlapped everywhere - or at least in Toronto, Canada.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Though I'm not a fan of the vampire genre that seems to be increasingly popular these days, I found this one funny, witty, and with a lot going for it in terms of plot, characters, and vampire jokes. There is also a great deal of action and danger as Sarah learns about vampire hunters. She finds out firsthand that there are a lot of them out there who want to wipe out the entire population of vampires, creatures who have been misrepresented over time, and are for the most part, really nice people. If you are looking for a funny take on the old vampire story, you'll find Bitten & Smitten a great place to start.
