Deke Watley comes to New Orleans to try his luck in a private poker game. Since he's not a big time player, his summons to this particular game doesn't make sense to him. But who knows? Amateurs make mistakes. Maybe he can profit.

It's Mardi Gras and the hordes of revelers on the streets give another world atmosphere to what soon turns into a nightmare for Deke. He meets his past and she is both welcoming and damning. He finds New Orleans and its inhabitants savage and terrifying – at least the people he has encountered. Brutality seems to be hotel owner Alex Moreau's middle name. The hotel employee who wears a silk mask over part of his face tells his story without uttering a word.

The story is set in 1958, and the background sights and sounds play a large role in Bourbon Street. If there is a moral to this first novel, it is that every action has a reaction ... and Deke's past actions have him running for his life.
