Sympathy Between Humans    by Jodi Compton Order:  USA  Can Delacorte, 2005 (2005) Hardcover     Reviewed by Mary Ann Smyth Jodi Compton, whose first book 37th Hour was considered a dazzling debut by Kirkus review, has presented the reading public with another thrilling read. Linking her characters to her last book, she picks up threads left dangling and craftily weaves them into the fabric of Sympathy Between Humans. With her husband Shiloh in jail, and her partner Genevieve in France, Policewoman Sarah Pribek, working for the County Sheriff's Department, must face alone the consequences of Genevieve's murder of the man who brutally attacked and killed her daughter. With the police department of Minneapolis investigating her role in that murder, Sarah tries to help a young girl who is looking for her missing twin brother. This is where the plot takes a quick turn and falls into an intrigue of family history that is fascinating. And just when you think you have it all figured out, Compton throws another curve and you're back to square one. I have one problem with the book. Sarah's last name is Pribek and her superior's last name is Prewitt. Too much alike. And confusing at times. But that's just my personal hang-up. The exciting climax continues for many pages and just when you get your breath back, Compton takes it away again.
