This frivolous little book is sub-titled 'The Romance, the Glamour, the Tears, and More!', which may seem more weighty than the reality. (The more also includes suggestions for the best flavour of ice cream to accompany a specific movie.)

The author has impressive credentials in the film world; according to the information at the end, she is currently teaching film-making and marketing at UCLA Extension, after working as a film-maker herself. However, I suspect she would be the first to admit that this book is hardly based on scientific study or extensive analysis. Rather, Adelman shares her own opinions and biases; and the reader (myself included) is free to agree or disagree with her choices.

Chick flicks are far from my first choice. (I like science-fiction, adventures, and comedies.) Even so, I found Adelman's commentaries funny and fun. The Ultimate Guide to Chick Flicks is a frothy diversion that tours some memorable films and presents some provocative opinions. Non-experts like myself can also glean information that they may not have had before. Admittedly, this is hardly a subject that falls into the Must-Know category; but if you want an amusing accompaniment to a cup of herbal tea or a glass of wine, this little book is a good choice.

On a more serious note, it is interesting to track the evolution of certain societal trends. We have come a long way from the restraint and innocence of past decades to the mattress dancing that is commonplace nowadays. Do have fun with The Ultimate Guide to Chick Flicks. And you might want to explore some of the ice cream choices suggested by Adelman as well!
