The murder of a pompous writer in the wee village of Lochdubh in the Scottish Highlands leads to Hamish trying to exonerate the villagers of the crime. Many of them had reason to murder the insufferable and boring man. Could one of Hamish's neighbors be the culprit? Or possibly one of the television crew that's in town to film an episode of a soap? Hamish fervently hopes this is the case. As usual, he's hampered by Chief Inspector Blair, who haunts his life with threats to close the police station in Lochdobh and transfer Hamish to Strathbane. Also as usual, Beaton serves up complications in Hamish's personal life. A man-eating, whiskey-drinking policewoman sets her sights on the Constable. His old girlfriend Elspeth returns, and Freda, a schoolteacher, thinks Hamish is the cat's meow. What's a man to do? Solve crimes.
