Mary Jane Clark, with Hide Yourself Away, has written an intricately plotted mystery that is an easy read but very hard to put down. The disappearance fourteen years previously of a socialite in Newport, Rhode Island, has repercussions in present time when her bones are found in an old tunnel. All the characters involved in the past are around town today, and slowly the reader realizes that each one had a reason to kill the woman.

Could the victim's husband be the murderer? Or maybe his lover? Possibly her lover? The scrimshaw dealer, the deceased's best friend, the caterer ...? The toney town is rocked on its heels when another murder occurs. Followed quickly by one more. And an assault! What is happening? Tie all these strings together, and add a television crew who are in Newport doing a feature. Thrown into the mix are TV interns competing for a full time job, one of whom has a custody battle looming for her child.

The novel is imbued with clarity and suspense. It's easy to follow the myriad characters who grace the pages. The pace is quick and to the point, while still allowing the reader a good look at the cottages of Newport. Much to my delight, I was completely wrong about the identity of the culprit. Hide Yourself Away is a recommend-to-your-friends book, and I plan to keep an eye out for the next Mary Jane Clark mystery.
