hat a smashing book. Action packed, fast-paced, enough suspense to satisfy anyone, tightly written, wonderfully diverse characters, and with an exotic setting that I must now add to the places I want to visit.
P
ark Ranger Anna Pigeon is sent to the Dry Tortugas National Park to replace a ranger who flipped out – supposedly because his girl friend left him. Anna discovers she has ties to this remote grouping of tiny islands off Key West. An ancestor of hers spent time there at the end of the Civil War, when Fort Jefferson was built to fend off possible attack. Nevada Barr skillfully weaves the present day with the past. With nary a break in continuity, she manages to keep the suspense going in both centuries – the nineteenth and the twenty-first.

his is Barr's twelfth novel, with each one better than the last. In it, an enticing look at the Lincoln conspirators shares space with today's shady operations among the coral reefs of the Atlantic. With a touch of a love story thrown in,
Flashback
is a sure winner, a topnotch mystery.
