Massie Block is the queen of seventh grade at the exclusive, private Octavian Country Day School in Westchester, New York. She holds court with her Clique - her three best friends, Dylan, Alicia, and Kristen. Everyone wants to be Massie's friend. Her group goes to spas, makes sure they have the most up-to-date clothes (never last season's!), and sips chai lattes between classes.

Suddenly Massie's world is turned upside down, when her father's best friend moves his family from Florida into the Block estate guest house. Their daughter, Claire, is Massie's age, but she may as well come from a different world. Claire wants to be Massie's friend, but her Gap jeans and Keds don't pass muster with the Prada and Jimmy Choo crowd. As the foursome try to ruin Claire's life, she begins to search for ways to seek revenge of her own. Can Claire and the Clique foster any sort of truce, or are they bound to be enemies forever?

The Clique is chick lit for teens. These girls are beyond rich. They think nothing of spending $700 on a sweater and then giving it to charity when they decide it's ugly. Readers will live vicariously through Massie and her friends in a world that most can only imagine. Though Massie puts on a tough exterior, she's really quite insecure and it takes someone like Claire to break through her mask. I cringed at some of the things the girls did to each other - in an attempt to make themselves look good and others look bad - but in real life, these backstabbing incidents really do take place.

Some of these twelve-year-olds' actions were stretching it a bit ... seeming more like high school than seventh grade behavior. And the resolution, after all of the horrible interactions that preceded it, seemed a bit forced. All in all though, The Clique is a cute read that teens will devour quickly.
