The great thing about Melanie Barnard's latest cookbook, Ready, Set, Dough!, is that most of the recipes she presents can be whipped up in under an hour. Even better - for all you time strapped moms and career persons out there - the main ingredient requires only a short stop at your local grocery store. Barnard has compiled a wonderful selection of snacks, one dish suppers, breads, and desserts, that you can make with versatile pre-packaged dough (cookie, phillo, puff pastry, brownie, yeast bread and biscuit) all available in your grocer's freezer section.

In the introduction, Barnard lists various helpful hints ranging from the 'Basics of Baking' to 'Ingredients To Have on Hand' in your kitchen at all times. For those who are even more strapped for time, she also includes half a dozen mail-order sources for dough. The rest of the book is divided into eleven tidy, easy to read chapters that cover everything from pies, cookies and bars to savory pizza, flatbreads and main dishes. Here's just a sampling of some of the cookbook's mouth-watering recipes: Sticky Pecan Pie, Ice Cream Sandwiches, Caramel Apple Upside Down Tart, Fall Fruit Strudel, Ham and Swiss Spiral Bread, Pizza Margherita, Provencal Puff Pastry Twist, Chicken and Herb Baked Dumplings (yumm!). Even the more complicated sounding recipes don't take long to prepare, and a fair number are perfect to make ahead.

Ready, Set, Dough! would make a welcome addition to any busy kitchen, given its varied and imaginative blend of over one hundred recipes that are fast, easy and scrumptious - likely to satisfy even the pickiest eaters in your home.
