It's also a love story, but without the happy ending we all love. Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp headed out of Papeete Harbor in Tahiti, destined for San Diego. The two originally met because of their mutual love of the sea, and they planned to be married. They were ferrying the yacht Hazana to its home port. I am not a sailor, so the explanations of all the gear and rigging and navigational readings fell on unreceptive ears. But the account of what happened, when the Hazana was hit by a hurricane and Richard was lost, is the stuff of movie thrillers. Tami's forty-day sail to save herself is a lesson in determination, faith, the will to survive and just pure guts. Red Sky at Mourning proves that we all have strength in us, of which we are not aware until we need to call on it. Tami found that her strength had no limits.
