This is one for lovers of New York, particularly Queens, in all its quirky diversity. Ted, a former lawyer, whose family story is twisted and sad, finds himself having to help the ones who have hurt him the most.

In trying to do this, Ted runs into all sorts of adventures: a murder, robbery, bribery, graft. He is helped by some very interesting characters: an idealistic young woman who wants to save a neighborhood; a taxi driver who speaks no English but can get him anywhere he needs to go practically without harm; and a resourceful drunk.

The action is fast, furious and painful, but while all that is going on we get to know more about Ted and his particular kind of humanity, along with his undying loyalty to a certain baseball team. The legal aspects around the crimes are kind of hard to understand, but author Sears helps us out enough to keep us in the game.

We have no idea how everything is going to be resolved, but along with the rough stuff are many beautiful moments, making the read very satisfying. It is great to know there is a sequel, Love the Stranger.
