The Poison Pen
is the ninth in her cozy
Scottish Bookshop Mystery
series that blends Scottish history with murder and minor mayhem. The series lead is American Delaney Nichols, who works at the Cracked Spine bookstore in Edinburgh and is happily wed to local pub owner Tom Shannon.
T
his episode opens with the city- and Delaney - saddened by the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Delaney's boss Edwin offers her a welcome distraction, to investigate the ancient sword his old friend, Jolie Lannister, has found on her estate. Delaney arrives to find an elderly woman who is a serious hoarder and is besieged by a lawyer and auctioneers. Jolie manages to evict them but soon afterwards one of them is found dead on the property.
C
omplicating matters further, it turns out that Jolie's mother claimed her daughter was the child of King Edward VIII and the rightful heir to the throne! As always, Delaney finds herself playing the amateur sleuth and getting into increasingly hot water along the way. Luckily her friends and Tom have her back.
