is the twelfth (following
The Thirst
) in Jo Nesbo's dark and twisty mystery series starring alcholic loner Harry Hole, who worked as a Crime Squad Police Detective in Oslo, Norway. Like Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch in many ways, Hole is persistent to the point of obsession, and often in trouble with his bosses.
T
he previous episode brought Harry back together with the love of his life, Rakel, teaching at the Police Academy. However, it ended very badly for Harry when Rakel banished him from her life. He starts to behave in a manner that looks like stalking. Aside from that, he's working for the Oslo Police again in their cold case office. He remains obsessed with serial rapist/murderer Svein Finne. Harry help put Finne in jail, but he's now been freed after over a decade served.
T
he episode opens on a cliffhanger, when an old man (slightly muddled and unable to speak) spots a car and driver swept into an ice-cold river. He tries to tell his son but cannot - not yet at least. Then readers see Svein Finne committing murder. Next, we find Harry Hole awakening after a drunken blackout, blood on his hands. Then he gets a call that devastates him - he's lost Rakel forever - and he has no memory of the night she was killed.
H
arry comes under suspicion of Rakel's murder and even wonders himself if he did it. It's all too much for him. As always, Jo Nesbo delivers a totally engrossing wheels within wheels plot in
Knife
, and an entirely unexpected conclusion to
whodunit
. Don't miss this brilliant series.
