It opens on a beach near a bar, as two grifters (Sean and narrator Ali) size up their next target, an English tourist (Lulu) who seems the perfect mark - and looks awfully like Ali. Sean calls himself John and says he's Ali's brother. Ali grew up damaged and angry in a series of foster homes, and met Sean in India. Though they have been successful working together, he's controlling and manipulative, and she's looking for an out. When Lulu challenges their story and Sean kills her, Ali wants to call the police but fears that Sean will set her up as the guilty party. She takes Lulu's identity and flees to a holiday home in the small Provence village where Lulu had contracted to work as a chef. Ali grows close to her employers, while holding her secrets close and scanning news reports for anything about the murder. She also grows very close to a writer, Rob, whom the family had invited to stay. Though he soon suspects she's not Lulu, he keeps her secret. Ali is terrified that Sean will find her, and so he does - which is when the author makes a final, and very satisfying, twist to her mystery. Sun Damage is well worth the read.
