, opens on New Year's Eve in 1999, and it's a gruesome beginning! Seven women sit in a candlelit semicircle, looking at a man's head in the middle. Though each had a motive to kill him, no-one admits to it. The rest of Jamie Spellman is missing.

hey can't call the police as they had all talked about taking action against Jamie. Journalist Kaysha, whom he'd raped, brought them together. She plans to find out who killed Jamie, so she can help cover it up. Her relationship with Detective Inspector Nova Stokoe, who leads the police investigation, might help. As she and Nova dig into what happened in parallel, readers are introduced to the six other women.

here's Kaysha's friend Sarah, who drinks too much, drowning bad memories. Olive's daughter died because of Jamie. Ana, who is trans, worked with him, had believed his lies and helped spread them.
