In her opening to The Good Ones, Polly Stewart shows Lauren Ballard 'scraping a key along the side of a new cherry-red Chevy Silverado'. Media reports never showed this side of her, after she disappeared. Almost twenty years later, Nicola Bennett returns to Appalachian Tyndall County, still haunted by the mystery, though everyone else seems to have moved on. The story moves back and forth in time to show Nicola and Lauren together in the past, and what she finds out in the present. She reconnects with other friends of Lauren's and with Lauren's husband Warren and her daughter Mabry, now a teen. Someone doesn't like Nicola trying to find answers and she's threatened, attacked, even suspected herself. But she - and the reader - eventually get to the truth of what happened so long before.
