I
have long enjoyed Elly Griffith's series starring forensic archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway, but missed a few episodes along the way. It all began with
The Crossing Places
. Early on in the series, Ruth had a daughter, Kate, in a complicated relationship with married DCI Harry Nelson.
N
ow, as
The Last Remains
opens in 2021, Nelson and his wife Michelle are separated but on excellent terms. Kate is in secondary school, Ruth's half sister Zoe has moved next door, and Nelson wants Ruth to move in with him. Ruth is called when a skeleton is found during a café renovation. It turns out to be that of Emily Pickering, missing since 2002. Distracting Ruth from the case, her university is threatening to close her department.
T
he story moves back and forth in time to show earlier events that led to Emily's death. Her Cambridge tutor comes under suspicion as does Ruth's close friend Cathbad, who is frail after a severe bout with Covid. Investigators find links to Neolithic flint mines in Grimes Graves. Cathbad goes missing and it becomes a race against time for Ruth and Nelson to save him.
A
s always, Griffiths delivers a solid police procedural, with an ever growing and intriguing coterie of characters, and a fascinating archaeological base. Don't miss this illuminating series.
