Now a PI, he dresses in style, is a jazz musician, and has a beloved daughter, Sophie, heading to university. This first episode opens in 1943, Copenhagen, where a truckful of Jewish refugees are being driven to refuge at the Hansen farm in Helsingor. They are betrayed and the farming family shot. Fast forward to the present day, when Gabriel's ex, Leila, walks into the hole in the wall where his band is playing to ask for his help. A lawyer, Leila wants him to investigate the brutal murder of right-wing politician Sanne Melgaard. Her client, Iraqi refugee Yousef Ahmed, was convicted and has been in prison for five years. Yousef's son had been tortured and murdered by ISIS for working as a translator for the Danish military. He was refused asylum and sent back to Baghdad where he was executed. Gabriel starts digging and finds holes in the case. He learns that Sanne had been getting death threats and was writing a book about the Nazi occupation in Denmark. The plot thickens rapidly while Gabriel struggles with the feelings he still has for Leila. He is attacked and threatened and so is Sophie. A professor Gabriel wants to consult is murdered. The Russian mafia is involved. Someone very powerful doesn't want Yousef cleared. A Death in Denmark is an excellent and intricate mystery, enriched by a broad set of very credible and engaging characters. I plan to follow this series!
