Behind Closed Doors
, now brings readers another novel about a manipulated and mistreated wife,
The Prisoner
.
T
he story starts in the PRESENT but alternates with PAST events. It opens on the kidnapping of our lead, Amelie, along with her wealthy husband Ned Hawthorpe. They're driven to a house and Amelie is released into an unlit bedroom. Over time, she explores her surroundings and looks for a means of escape.
R
eaders learn of Amelie Lamont's PAST life. Orphaned at age sixteen, she heads to London to work as a waitress and save for college. She ends up with a live-in housekeeping job for Carolyn Blakely, and gets to know Carolyn's friends Lina and Justine well.
J
ustine takes Amelie along to a party Ned is giving. Amelie finds Ned's bodyguard, Hunter, incredibly attractive. Ned offers her a job as assistant and takes her to Las Vegas. He asks her, as a business proposition, to marry him, so he can avoid family pressure to marry another woman. In return, he'll pay her college fees.
A
melie agrees but soon comes to regret it. Ned lied about his reasons for needing to marry. When they return to England, she's essentially imprisoned in his mansion, unable to contact her friends. Then she finds out what her husband has done.
U
ltimately, Amelie feels safer locked in a room by kidnappers than she would be out in the world with Ned. How does it end? You'll have to read to the last page of this engrossing mystery to find out, but there's quite a reckoning.
