tacy Willingham, author of
A Flicker in the Dark
, now brings us another unusual psychological mystery,
All the Dangerous Things
. As it opens in Savannah, Isabelle Drake has been unable to sleep properly for a year, since her toddler, Mason, was kidnapped from his crib while she and her husband Ben slept close by. It's now a cold case for everyone except Izzy.
S
he lives alone with her dog Roscoe. Ben has given up and tells her that her attitude is unhealthy and that she has to move on. He also tells her that he is seeing someone. Izzy has done everything she can think of and can't give up. She tracks sex offenders and even speaks at true crime conferences. After one of them, podcaster Waylon Spencer asks to interview her. She refuses at first but then changes her mind.
T
he story moves back and forth in time, between Izzy's childhood with her sister Margaret (who died) and the present. Ben was married when he and Izzy met and then his wife died. Izzy invites Waylon to stay with her, to allow more time for interviews. As they talk, and her sleep deprivation continues, she begins to suspect everyone, including Ben and even herself.
I
zzy and readers do find out what happened and her persistence is rewarded, though not in a way that I expected when I started the novel. A very good read!
