D
avid Rosenfelt delivers yet another endearing Christmas canine mystery in
Santa's Little Yelpers
. As usual, it stars reluctant lawyer Andy Carpenter and his growing trail of friends and followers, with readers chuckling all the way.
A
ndy and his ex-cop wife Laurie continue to enjoy life with their adopted son Ricky and their beloved dogs Tara, Sebastian and Hunter. Andy remains closely involved in the dog rescue Tara Foundation. As this episode opens, the foundation has taken in eight puppies and it's a relief for all when a new worker, Chris Myers, offers to foster them.
A
s always, complications ensue. Myers (a lawyer) had served time for a crime he swears he didn't commit and now a key witness, Charlie Burgess, has admitted to him that he was paid to lie. When Burgess is killed, Chris comes chief suspect. Another killing follows. One name keeps coming up, that of Paul Donnelly, a powerful mob boss.
H
is involvement demands that of Marcus Clark, to have Andy's back (front and sides as well!) It seems that Chris's previous work as a lawyer is what got him targeted in the first place. Of course, Andy works it all out and gets to enjoy his usual victory party, while the yelpers (and their mother) all find homes.
