Nella keeps looking for her, but it is Thea to whom she gives her creations. Thea is definitely the needier. She must marry, but who will have her - a mixed-color person with a black father just barely hanging on to their beautiful home, and all the world keeps staring. Both Thea and her father have learned to steel themselves against all the injustices in this society, but Thea is young and wants to know romance. When she finds it, she gets more than she bargained for. There is growth and sorrow here. Jessie Burton has written a companion piece to her bestselling The Miniaturist, that is equally as fascinating. She draws us in with her detailed descriptions of what is going on both in and around her characters. Especially interesting are the topics of racial discrimination and the powerlessness of women. Burton's quiet style is unique and very much suited to the subject matter.
