. A. Jance us well known for top-notch and deservedly popular mystery series starring Joanna Brady, the Walker Family, Ali Reynolds and J. P. Beaumont.
Nothing to Lose
is her twenty-fifth entry (following
Sins of the Fathers
) in the latter series starring our seventy-four year old hero, retired and married to police chief Mel Soames.
T
wo decades before, when he worked homicide in Seattle, Beau's partner, Sue Danielson, was murdered by her ex-husband. When Sue's teen son Jared called Beau, he told him to grab his younger brother Chris and flee. They survived, but now Chris has fallen off the face of the earth and Father Jared Danielson is asking for Beau's help.
C
hris had been a troubled youth who eventually ran away to his father's family in Homer, Alaska. Now, his other grandmother (Sue's mother) is very ill and wants to see him one last time. Beau agrees to investigate. He learns that Chris had a son, born after his disappearance to Danitza Adams, an ER nurse in Anchorage. Beau packs for Alaska.
H
e contacts the state crime lab and professor of forensic anthropology Harriet Raines. He hires a driver, Twinkle Winkleman, who goes far beyond driving duties. Careful police work allows Beau to close the cold case and to prevent a modern murder. I enjoyed this episode, which was enlivened by the colorful characters Beau met in Alaska, especially Twink.
