illy Macmillan, author of

The Long Weekend
, yet another tense psychological mystery, with a deep vein of horror running through it.
T
hree women '
married to best buddies
' have booked a retreat weekend at the very isolated off-grid Dark Fell Barn, owned by John (who's having memory problems from dementia) and Maggie. The women arrive the night before the men are due to join them. Each is vulnerable in her own way. A storm builds.
J
ayne, who worked in army intelligence, already smells a rat in the weekend arrangements. Ruth, a doctor and very stressed new mother, is an alcoholic. Emily, the youngest, is newly wed and insecure in her relationship with the others. Another close friend, Edie, will not be there, after the sudden drowning death of her husband Rob.
O
n their arrival, the women are shocked to find a note saying that one of their husbands will die before they return home- but which one and why? They're unable to make contact. Over the course of the evening, readers see them devolve in a way that reminded me of
Lord of the Flies
. John steadily worsens as well.
W
hile this develops, readers follow Edie's daughter Imogen and begin to wonder who her father is. Violence escalates to a shocking conclusion.
